Shopify: Plus Shops using Avalara taxes had incorrect calculations
Timeline of updates
- resolved
There was code shipped that caused Shopify to send the store’s address as the destination address during the service disruptions. This was originally designed as a failsafe to ensure taxes were charged for all types of orders, including orders that don’t require shipping. The code that was shipped caused us to default to the above address, instead of the correct ones. This code change was reverted. We are currently adding monitoring around this “state” and testing around specifics of a checkout to make sure that if the origin and destination addresses are the same, these will be flagged to our operational team - we’re also investigating the possibility of removing this case, or being more stringent as to when it applies. These efforts should mitigate a similar failure in the future.

Archive proof
Rewindex commits each version of an incident it captures to a daily checkpoint, chains it to the day before, and has the checkpoint timestamped by FreeTSA and DigiCert.
How the archive is checked, and what it cannot prove.
This incident predates live tracking (October 17, 2026). It came from the vendor’s own published history, which is not covered by checkpoints.
Impact, status and times are the vendor’s own, as last archived. View on www.shopifystatus.com (opens in new tab).
