Cloudinary: Increased error rates and latencies when creating new images
Timeline of updates
- resolved
For 18 minutes, between 23:40 and 23:58 UTC, customers have experienced increased latencies and error rates when uploading and generating new images. This global slowdown was caused by a singularly anomalous media resource, whose processing created an overflow. This resource was used by a popular website. This combination resulted in a non-malicious DDOS attack on our servers. Our monitoring systems notified us immediately of the situation, and our incident analysis systems helped us isolate the offending resource and we eventually blocked it from our system. We are working to add protections beyond the ones that already have and failed, that will prevent such incidents from recurring.
From Cloudinary’s published incident history: for incidents before Rewindex began polling this status page, only the final update text is available.
Archive proof
Rewindex commits each version of an incident it captures to a daily checkpoint, chains it to the day before, and has the checkpoint timestamped by FreeTSA and DigiCert.
How the archive is checked, and what it cannot prove.
This incident predates live tracking (October 17, 2026). It came from the vendor’s own published history, which is not covered by checkpoints.
Impact, status and times are the vendor’s own, as last archived. View on status.cloudinary.com (opens in new tab).
